text (long) VE3D - Men of Valor. What's it all about?
John Whitmore - Men of Valor is a first person shooter set in the Vietnam War. It focuses on recreating the drama and intensity of combat during that conflict, using a combination of detailed environments, dynamic scripted events, and emotionally engaging AI to immerse the player in the jungle firefights, desperate defences and tense search and destroy operations the Marines engaged in from 1965 to 1968.
The player takes the role of Dean Shepard, a young African American who joins the Marines out of school and is sent to fight in Vietnam. Vietnam is the first war where Americans of all colours fought alongside each other as putative equals, and the game portrays some of the tensions surrounding this new state of affairs. As the war progresses, volunteer soldiers like Dean were supplemented by draftees, some of whom were reluctant to go to war on Vietnam - Dean's younger brother among them. The conflicts between black and white and military and non-military cultures adds drama to the overall storyline.
As Dean succeeds in his missions he is given greater tasks and responsibilities and comes to participate in most of the major actions of the war. He coordinates with ARVN forces to hunt down VC supply caches, attacks depots along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and participates in the counterattack on the Imperial Capital of Hue. Dean's exploits are drawn from historical accounts and although he sees far more action than any one soldier could have (or would have wanted to), each encounter is inspired by an actual battlefield experience.
